PLEASE YOUR PALETTE AT PLATTE CANYON GRILL. The next time you are searching for a fresh place to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner, try the award-winning Platte Canyon Grill in Bailey (60629 US Hwy 285). They are a refreshing taste of South Louisiana in the mountains, with authentic Cajun and Creole eatin’. “Bennett is from New Orleans, with Baton Rouge experience,” co-owner Kelly Murphy said of her chef husband. “He creates all of the home-grown recipes. Almost everything is handmade.” See if you can read this without drooling on the paper: their seafood pirogue?(pronounced pee-row in Louisiana -- a pirogue is a flat-bottom canoe) starts with half of an eggplant that is skinned, hollowed out, covered with seasoned flour, and fried. The eggplant is set on a bed of sautéed spinach, filled with sautéed shrimp, crawfish, eggplant, herbs and seasonings, and covered with hollandaise sauce. Yum. If your tastes are more mountain man, try the select, hand cut steaks or fish, savory pork tenderloin or a juicy hamburger. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 7 am to 9 pm (closing time varies with the seasons). (303-838-1112) plattecanyongrill.com

DINE OUT AT CJ’S CHICAGO HOT DOGS. Now you can bring your dog while you enjoy an authentic Chicago dog from CJ’s in downtown Evergreen. CJ’s has added outdoor patio seating to their cute little yellow, red, and blue restaurant about one-half block east of the Little Bear. “We’ve put a few nice tables outside at the end of the boardwalk,” Chuck “CJ” Fanaro said. The comfortable patio area has tables and benches nestled against the picturesque rock outcroppings and colorful gardens. It’s the perfect place to relax with a famous Vienna Beef Chicago dog, Italian sausage, giant gyros, or one of the breakfast selections that are available all day. CJ’s also features Internet-friendly computers, but you’ll have to go inside to surf on those. Open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm. (303-674-9293) cjschicagodogs.com

LOOK NO FURTHER THAN FUHRER’S PERFORMANCE CYCLES. Need Harley-Davidson repairs and service? Fuhrer’s is H-D PhD certified and handles just about anything you can throw at them. “We do all sorts of repairs and service,” Jared Fuhrer, who co-owns the shop with wife, Mandy, explained. Go whole hog in their fully equipped shop (30706 Bryant Drive, Suite 112, Evergreen). They’ll do warranty work, insurance claims, scheduled maintenance, electrical diagnosis, or the tricky cylinder head or crankshaft rebuild, engine balancing or cylinder and case reboring in their in-house machine shop. They also fix old classics, do restorations and make performance modifications. “Let us customize your ride or build you one.” Open Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm, Saturday 10 am to 2 pm. EXOTIC EATS AT SAIGON LANDING. Enjoy authentic Vietnamese and Thai cuisine in downtown Evergreen (28080 Douglas Park Road, behind the Little Bear) at the elegant Saigon Landing Restaurant. New owners Michelle and Victor Chan purchased the popular Thuy Hoa Restaurant last November and have been busy adding to the already well-liked menu. “We want to kick everything up a notch,” Michelle Chan explained of their plans. The Chans have painted the interior, recarpeted and upgraded the furniture, linens and china. Live piano entertains every Thursday - Sunday evenings while guests savor the superb selections including Vietnamese marinated steak (Bo Nuong Muoi Tieu), the all-time favorite grilled lamb chops (De Nuong Xa) marinated in a five-spice seasoning, or the vegetarian curry (Cari Chay) stewed with curry, coconut milk and a touch of chili. Save room for dessert, Michelle has created a crème caramel flan that can’t be resisted, or try the popular fried bananas served with honey and ice cream along with a cup of delicious Vietnamese coffee. The restaurant also features a vintage tiger oak bar and a complete complement of cocktails and wines. Staying home for the night? They do take-out. Open Monday through Thursday, 11 am to 9:30 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 10:30 pm, and Sunday noon to 9:30 pm. (303-674-5421) saigonlanding.com

MARY CARRISH BRINGS WELLS FARGO HOME MORTGAGE TO EVERGREEN. Mary Carrish and her assistant Sarah Godfrey have moved from Bank of the West to open a new office for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage (32186 Castle Court, Suite 230) in north Evergreen. They offer everything for your home mortgage needs including purchase, refinance, construction, and lot loans. “Wells Fargo is the nation’s number one retail lender,” home mortgage consultant Carrish explained. “When you think mortgage, think Mary.” Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm. MORE ON WALGREENS. I often get questioned about rumors that a Walgreens is planning to come to Evergreen. Here’s the latest: “We are looking in the area,” Media Relations rep. Carol Hively stated. “But we are still in the early stages. We work with a lot of different developers who do the legwork for us, such as getting the plans approved and resolving any zoning issues.” A new Walgreens opens every 20 hours.

BERGEN VALLEY’S FLAT SPOT. Been wondering what that perfectly smooth area is that’s wedged between The Lodges and Bergen Valley Elementary in north Evergreen? It’s not going to be a new business. “It’s a full size soccer/lacrosse field,” Evergreen Park and Rec. Executive Director Dick Wulf explained. “But the sod can’t go in yet.” The sprinkler system is scheduled for installation and the sod will be planted once the water restrictions are lifted. Sod takes 6 to 8 weeks to root before it can be used, so the chances of playing on it this fall are dropping.
